Workshop Descriptions
The following workshop will be offered on the first day (June 23, 2009) of the 11th
International Protégé Conference:
Challenges of Developing and Deploying Large Scale Biomedical Terminologies
(Chair: Ronald Cornet)
Currently, there are several large-scale biomedical terminology development projects and a number of more or
less mature medical terminologies available for deployment. This workshop aims to investigate the challenges of
developing and deploying these large-scale terminologies. The issues to be addressed include requirements
specific to large terminologies, the choice of representation languages and tools, the work-flow processes,
and barriers to deployment. Experts currently involved in the construction and maintenance of large-scale
terminologies will be asked to present their experiences. Contributions relating to similar work are most welcome.
