The Protégé plugin uses an RDF(s) database called Sesame. To access the full potential of Sesame, however, requires the installation of many other pieces of software. First, to actually access Sesame, you will need a Java servlet container. This requires Java itself. Also, to use the database facilities of Sesame, you will need a SQL database.
